Why Outdoor Mentoring is the Key!

Folks in the outdoor industry have been putting a lot of time and effort into the recruitment, retention and reactivation of hunters (R3 for short). With the hunting population making up an ever smaller percentage of the national population (somewhere under 10% now), it is important for state fish and wildlife agencies (who depend greatly on license sales to be able fulfill their mission) and companies who cater to the hunting and fishing crowd to find out what it takes to make a new hunter.

Ethan's First Turkey!

Young Ethan was one of the 9 young hunters that traveled to Bell Wildlife Specialties for the 2015 Youth Turkey Hunt that Dan Bell and Bell Wildlife Specialties has hosted for Pass It On - Outdoor Mentors, Inc. for the last 13 years. I got matched to Ethan through Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters last December, the third youngster I’ve had the pleasure of mentoring.

Ethan had taken his hunter safety class last August and had participated in one of Pass It On - Outdoor Mentors’ First Hunt events last October.

Michael Pearce has another installment in his ongoing "Adventures with Jake" series of articles about his experiences mentoring young Jake in the outdoors.

Here is a link to his story about their turkey hunt the first weekend of the youth turkey season here in Kansas:  http://www.kansas.com/sports/outdoors/michael-pearce/article17610416.html

Young Jake is very fortunate to have someone like Michael step up and mentor him in the outdoors, taking him hunting and fishing. There are many youngsters just like Jake all across the country who need a mentor. That could be you.
