A jam-packed Saturday full of outdoor fun and learning is in the cards for attendees of the 2017 Smoky Hill Outdoor Youth Festival, August 26, 2017. The one-day event will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Smoky Hill Weapons Range, 8429 West Farrelly Rd., in Salina.

Youth ages 6-17 are invited to attend, and must have an accompanying adult.

Description

The Osborne County Pheasants Forever Chapter and the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) are inviting young hunters to participate in an opening weekend dove hunt.  This hunt is expected to provide the kids with plenty of shooting action as the birds flock to grain fields for morning feeding. 

 The hunt will be for youth between the ages of 10 and 16 who have had limited previous dove hunting experience.  Kids who have not hunted before will be given preference to participate.

Description

Each year the Jayhawk Chapter of QUWF sponsors the Hunter Education Program and two youth hunts; a dove and pheasant hunt. This year the dove hunt will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2017 from sunrise until sundown. There is no cost for this hunt. Shotgun shells are provided as well as shotguns, if needed. The hunt will again be at the Clinton Wildlife area, just west of Clinton Lake. We have a new location this year, so, contact us for details.

Pass It On - Outdoor Mentors will be hosting a Hunter Education class at the Big Brothers Big Sisters Office, 310 E 2nd, Wichita, KS in Wichita KS.

The class will run from 6pm - 9pm on September 15, and from 8am - 5pm on September 16.  Students must attend all sessions to be able to sit for the exam at the end of the day on 2/25.

There is no charge for the class.

Students must be at least 11 years old the day of the class.

We will have shotgun instruction and controlled hunts for pheasants with experienced guides and hunting dogs. The event is designed to get novice hunters ready for the upcoming upland bird season.

We'll fish the private FOP Lake north of Wichita in the morning and have some hotdogs when we're all done.
