A First Time Goose Hunt

We started the 2020 hunting season off with an awesome goose hunt with guide Joel Morris. You might recall that Joel hosted a waterfowl hunt for us earlier this year and a goose hunt for us last year.

For this hunt, we had 3 hunters from Maize South Trap Team and one from Maize High join Joel, myself and the Maize South coach, Will Moore. For the 3 youth hunters from Maize South, it was their first goose hunt.

Joel planned an afternoon hunt on a corn field that had not been harvested but had be cut for silage. This resulted in the field literally being covered with cracked corn. Just the ticket for ducks and geese!

When we arrived at the field, Joel had already set the decoys and was in the process of grassing in the layout blinds. The young hunters got busy gathering up grasses and camo’ing the blinds, per Joel’s instruction.

Then it was a matter of waiting for the geese to come to feed for the evening. Since it was such a nice day with clear skies and warm temperatures, they weren’t in any hurry to feed that evening. But when they started coming, there were plenty of ‘em!

I filmed a bit of the action as they circled and circled our decoys. It was getting almost quitting time and Joel whispered to the hunters, “We’ll take ‘em on the next pass!” I had a tough choice…continue filming the awesome sight or set down my phone and get ready to shoot. I chose the latter!

It’s not everyday you get to see a sight like this. And you certainly don’t get to see it while sitting on the couch.
