Why I Mentor: Miles Willhite

This Is Why I Mentor Series

A series to share, educate, and inspire others with mentoring stories.

We have all had one in our lives…. Someone we look up to. Someone we call when we have questions, concerns, and frustrations. Someone who provides sound and nurturing wisdom. Someone we can expose our true selves to and still feel supported. Someone we can hunt with. Someone we can fish with. Someone we can spend time with. A mentor.

This series is meant to be a way to educate and motivate you to give back to others. It is designed to inspire you to become a mentor. It is a reminder to thank your mentor. Hopefully the advice and stories shared here will leave you nothing short of empowered!

HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU BEEN MENTORING?

25 years! I've mentored all my hunting days either just taking friends, neighbors and last few years kids that wouldn't always be able to enjoy hunting activities in the way we can provide.

WHAT DOES MENTORING MEAN TO YOU?

Mentoring means a lot ...just seeing a kid smile or the face they make during the first time they field dress deer is priceless.

WHO WAS/IS YOUR MENTOR?

My father is my mentor. Growing up on a farm he would take me when he could while working hard to provide for our family.

HOW CAN SOMEONE ELSE MENTOR?

Anyone can mentor. Just do what you can.. You can fish, hunt, or just explore a creek bed. Kids love the opportunity to get out and learn and experience something they have never seen before.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MENTORING MOMENT?

My favorite moment was with mentor Brittany and a young lady that shot her first deer. We had to trace a blood trail for hours to find the deer in a creek and had to figure a way to get the deer out of the creek. Good times and laughs! We still talk about it today!

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE AS A MENTOR AND TRYING TO SHARE YOUR PASSION FOR HUNTING?

My biggest challenge is having the time, but we have future plans to get some kids involved in some steps in farming and providing for the wildlife from start to finish.
