Why I Mentor: John Francis
This Is Why I Mentor Series
A series to share, educate, and inspire others with mentoring stories.
We have all had one in our lives…. Someone we look up to. Someone we call when we have questions, concerns, and frustrations. Someone who provides sound and nurturing wisdom. Someone we can expose our true selves to and still feel supported. Someone we can hunt with. Someone we can fish with. Someone we can spend time with. A mentor.
This series is meant to be a way to educate and motivate you to give back to others. It is designed to inspire you to become a mentor. It is a reminder to thank your mentor. Hopefully the advice and stories shared here will leave you nothing short of empowered!

HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU BEEN MENTORING?
I’ve been mentoring hunters and shooters for over 30 years.
WHAT DOES MENTORING MEAN TO YOU?
To me, mentoring is about sharing experiences with others.
WHO WAS/IS YOUR MENTOR?
My mentor was my father. He taught me about hunting and the outdoors since I was very young.
WHY DO YOU MENTOR?
I mentor because I have found a passion that I want everyone to enjoy.
HOW CAN SOMEONE ELSE MENTOR?
Get up off their ass and just do it. Share with someone your passion, whatever it is.
WHAT IS YOUR ONE PIECE OF ADVICE TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BECOME A MENTOR?
Be patient with everyone you’re with.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MENTORING MOMENT?
The best experience I’ve had is working with kids with special needs. I have had many kids I have mentored in the shooting sports where it has changed their life. It has given them confidence and has improved their social skills.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE AS A MENTOR AND TRYING TO SHARE YOUR PASSION FOR HUNTING?
The biggest challenge for me mentoring for new hunters is cost and time. I primarily mentor waterfowl hunts and the license and stamps are sometimes a deal breaker.
