The Power of Mentorship: Manny's Journey in the Outdoors

The more I mentor youth, the more meaningful my experiences become. Out of the hundreds of kids I've had the privilege of working with, some stand out more than others. One of those young people is Manny. His story is a reminder of why mentorship matters, and how a simple connection can make a lifetime of difference.

Manny joined our program through our partnership with Real Men Real Leaders (RMRL). I'm not entirely sure when I met him, but I do remember his energy. Manny was eager to learn, and even more eager to get outside. He wasn't just there to participate—he was excited to be a part of something bigger. The moment that made me take notice of Manny, though, came when RMRL posted a video of him giving a passionate speech about wild turkeys. His enthusiasm was infectious! I knew we had to get him out on a turkey hunt.

Manny's first hunt was tough. He and his mentor were outwitted by a clever turkey who earned the nickname "Sneaky Peat." At least five other kids chased that turkey, but it remained elusive, continuing to outsmart everyone. Hopefully, we will see Sneaky Peat this Season!

When Manny signed up for his second turkey hunt, I knew exactly where to send him and his mentor: a spot we fondly call "The Wild Turkey Highway." This small field is a prime travel corridor and strut zone, where at least 10 other kids have shot their first bird.

That morning, I was hunting in a different field with a more experienced youth when I received the call—Manny had connected on his first Turkey! I could hear the excitement in his voice as he and his mentor explained how the bird had approached, staying just out of range. But Manny, with patience and focus, made the perfect shot with my Stevens .410. The turkey dropped right where it stood.

When we all met up at the "cabin," Manny couldn't wait to recount the story. His excitement was contagious, but what struck me was his gratitude. He was so thankful for the opportunity and for his mentor's guidance. Watching the video of that moment, I could see that Manny was hooked on the experience—and I knew we would be seeing much more of him in the future.

Since that first turkey hunt, Manny has gone on 12 more hunts with us: dove, pheasant, waterfowl, and, most recently, his very first deer hunt. And guess what? He shot a buck on that first deer hunt! He became the first youth from RMRL to harvest a deer. It's incredible to witness his growth and how his passion for the outdoors continues to flourish.

Manny's journey is a shining example of why we mentor. His dedication to learning, his excitement for the outdoors, and his deep gratitude show the impact that mentorship can have. I have no doubt that Manny will be a lifelong hunter, and I'm excited to see where his story goes from here.

I would also like to extend a huge thank you to all the mentors who have been a part of Manny's story. Their hard work, patience, and commitment have made a real difference in his life. Finally, a special thanks to Real Men Real Leaders for trusting us with the youth from their program. It's been an honor to work together and make an impact.

I can't wait to see the next chapter of Manny's journey— I know it will be good!.
