The Connections We Make

The Connections We Make
Hunting is often described as a solitary pursuit, but for many, the journey is deeply influenced by the guidance of a mentor. This relationship, forged in the trials and tribulations that nature throws at us, is more than just a passing interaction—it's a profound connection that shapes both the Mentor and the mentee.
In the world of hunting, mentorship is about more than just passing down skills. It's about sharing a way of life, a philosophy, and a respect for nature. A mentor teaches the nuances of hunting, demonstrates the ethics of hunting, the importance of conservation, and the art of reading the natural world.
For a mentee, it’s a chance to learn from someone who has spent years honing their skills and perfecting their craft. These lessons are priceless; these interactions can not be replaced by books and how-to videos on YouTube. Over the years, we've had the privilege of mentoring thousands of young hunters. While each experience is unique, some bonds between mentors and mentees stand out. We allow youth to sign up for any hunt that interests them, across various regions, and with whichever mentor is hosting it. Occasionally, we notice that some youth seek out hunts hosted by specific mentors.
It’s clear that something about these mentors—their hunting style, their personality, or the way they communicate—makes a lasting impact. Here are a few stories that highlight these remarkable connections.
Doug and Mathew
Doug is going on his third year as a mentor for our program! On one of the first deer hunts he hosted, he had the privilege of mentoring a young man named Mathew. They had such a good time on that hunt that Mathew signed up for a Turkey hunt with Doug the following spring. They followed that same trend the following season and Mathew just signed up for another deer hunt! There is no doubt about the bond between Doug and Mathew. When I reached out to Mathew and his father, they had this to say.
"Not all mentors can connect with youth on a personal level, but Doug truly does. We connected with him because he excels at relating to young hunters; he speaks to them as equals rather than talking down to them. Doug doesn't just provide instruction—he takes the time to teach them thoroughly." For instance, he guided Mathew through the dos and don'ts of turkey calling and the proper way to set up decoys. Thanks to Doug's patience and dedication, Mathew learned a lot about turkey calling. Beyond the hunting skills, Mathew also enjoys hearing Doug's captivating stories from his time in the Navy and his law enforcement career."
For Mathew and his father, Doug is more than just a guide in the woods. He's a role model and a friend, enriching their hunting experience with valuable lessons and engaging stories. This kind of mentorship not only enhances the skills of young hunters but also builds strong, enduring relationships.
Dan and Chase
Dan is a mentor who has been with us for quite some time; in fact, he was Mentor of the Year in 2022. His positive impact on countless youths is evident, but one relationship stands out: his mentorship of Chase. Chase was Dan's very first mentee, and together they hunted deer, ducks, squirrels, and upland birds.
When I spoke with Chase, he had a lot to say about his experience with Dan. Chase noted, “Dan goes above and beyond to ensure the success of a hunt, whether it's harvesting an animal or learning something new. He is always clear and precise with his instructions, and he takes the
time to explain why things are done a certain way. Dan is consistently friendly and kind, with hospitality that is unmatched. His mentorship doesn’t end with the successful harvest of game; it extends to processing the animal and turning it into a delicious meal.” Chase’s mother even remarked that after his first hunt with Dan, they felt as if they had gained another grandparent.
I think that Chase would agree that Dan’s dedication to mentoring goes beyond the call of duty, creating lasting impressions on everyone he works with. His exceptional ability to blend expert instruction with genuine care and kindness makes him not only a remarkable mentor but also a cherished friend.
Zaylee and I
As a parent and avid outdoorsman, I take great joy in mentoring my own children and strengthening our bonds. In my role as a coordinator for Pass It On! Outdoor Mentors: I have the privilege of mentoring countless young people outdoors, creating meaningful connections along
the way. One such connection is with a young woman named Zaylee. Our story differs from the ones above; I’ve known Zaylee’s father my entire life—he watched me grow up and knows my family well. Zaylee is a distant relative (her mom and my mom are second cousins). She is the same age as my oldest son and slightly older than my oldest daughter, so I’ve watched her grow up, too. I had the honor of being one of the instructors during her hunter education course and have been her mentor on both of her turkey hunts, two of the best Turkey hunts I have been On. We’re excited to expand our adventures this season with plans for waterfowl and predator hunts.
When I asked Zaylee and her dad why she prefers hunting with me over other mentors, they shared the following: “I enjoy hunting with Bobby because he’s my cousin, and I like to make memories with him. He always takes the time to explain what to do and what not to do, ensuring
I understand the correct way to do something,” Zaylee’s dad added, “Zaylee is kind of shy, but because you take the time to teach her, she feels more comfortable trying things she might otherwise avoid. Your relationship has helped her open up and try new things she might not have.”
Knowing Zaylee and her family personally has made our experience and bond even more special. I truly cherish the time spent with them as we work together to help Zaylee become a more skilled outdoorswoman. We are all excited about the adventures that lie ahead and look forward to many more memorable experiences together in the years to come!
The connections we forge through hunting are deeply meaningful. Through our program, we've witnessed countless mentors and mentees build profound relationships that extend far beyond the hunting field. Doug’s bond with Mathew, Dan’s impact on Chase, and my connection with Zaylee are great examples of how these interactions enrich lives and create lasting memories.
These stories highlight that mentorship is about more than just teaching them how to hunt. It's about sharing a passion, fostering personal growth, and building lasting friendships. As we continue to nurture these connections, we are reminded of the importance of our mission to cultivate a love for the outdoors while making a positive difference in the lives of young hunters.
The adventures that lay ahead promise to deepen these bonds and inspire future generations to embrace the Natural world through hunting and fishing.
